God guides our lives is through learning – both individually and in groups. Our small group ministries, include Bible studies, dinner groups, youth groups, and more. These opportunities inspire faith, deepen relationships and foster fellowship.

Most Common Questions
Lutherans get our name from Martin Luther, who began the Protestant Reformation back in the 1500’s. Luther focused on “grace” which is God’s gift of relationship with us and we continue in that tradition. Currently, Lutherans make up a large percentage of Protestant Christians in the world, finding many similarities with Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist denominations. At our church, we have some great resources that will help you learn more about Lutherans and our beliefs.
We are guided by God’s Word (the Bible) as other Christians. However, we use Luther’s writings to help us interpret what we read in the Bible.
Worship largely consists of music, prayer, sacraments and hearing God’s word. Our music is a blend of contemporary songs and traditional hymns with our musicians playing piano and guitar. Our worship is liturgical, meaning we follow a pattern of words and practices that come directly from the scriptures. This rhythm helps us hear God speaking to us. At most of our worship services, we invite all baptized believers to receive communion which is God’s grace in wafer and wine. Finally, in worship we hear God’s word by reading scripture, listening to the preacher’s sermon, and reciting the words of our liturgy.
Yes, Family Ministry has always been a focus at Joy. In addition to worship, we have many opportunities for kids to learn more about God and their own faith, as well as activities throughout the year.
We recommend starting with worship on a Sunday morning. This is the best way to worship, meet other people, and meet the staff. As you get comfortable, we recommend you get involved in a small group or in an event. Small groups and events will really help you build friendships that are so vital to a vibrant faith life.
The short answer is no, but we would love it if you do. In our church, you don’t need to be a member to worship and be involved in the life of the church. We do, however, believe that joining as a member is an outward commitment to be active in the life of the church and support others in their own faith life.
You don’t have to be a member to worship or take part in activities at Joy. (You don’t even have to be Lutheran!) If you’re new to the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and decide that you would like to become a member, please speak with the pastor or call the church office at (864) 486-1036 for more information.
